Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away.” -Barbara de Angelis As The Work/Life Balance Expert for working moms, women always ask me, “Is finding balance really attainable?”
My answer to that question is “absolutely and not exactly.” Some expert, huh? Allow me to explain. Between our kids, spouses, careers, errands and all the stuff in between, we’re constantly trying to find balance. But the truth of the matter is, we need to define what balance even means. It’s not a one-size fits all word. I looked up “balance” in the dictionary and there were so many definitions that I just chose the two that applied.
According to the Oxford dictionary, balance means “stability of body and mind” and “make well-proportioned and harmonious.” So based on these definitions, do you feel balanced? The reason so many of us have a hard time finding balance is because we think everything needs to be balanced at the same time. And this is where I say, that’s not going to happen. You could be perfectly “harmonious” in one area of your life and feel completely discordant in other areas.
Does that mean you need a sudden intervention? Not at all. That my fellow moms, is called, LIFE. Life throws us curve balls all the time. Just when we think we’ve got it figured out and we’re in a good mental state, we lose a client, someone gets sick or we find out we’re pregnant, with twins! Your focus shouldn’t be about trying to make everything fit all the time, but finding ways to cope during these off kilter moments. And you don’t need to spend hours raking your Feng Shui Sand Zen Garden to do this. Just become your own Master of Self-Balance.
Here’s how.
Practice self-respect It’s time to be kind to yourself and treat yourself with the same love and attention you would your own child. When you respect yourself, you make better, healthier choices that allow you tackle life’s biggest challenges when they come your way. Love your body. It’s true that the mind is a very powerful thing. But if you’re not physically healthy, there’s only so far your body will take you. You need to feed it healthy fuel and keep moving in order for it to support you in where you want to go. Feed your soul. Do things you’re passionate about.
Some moms find this kind of excitement in their jobs, but many have to look elsewhere. Carve out time each day to do something just for the fun of it. When you feed your creative side, it’s much easier to face the stuff you have to do. Be grateful for what you already have.
The quest for more balance or personal growth comes with its ups and downs. When you take time every day to stop, look around and be grateful for what you have and who you are, the hardships become lessons. And there’s always something valuable to learn from a lesson. When learn to love yourself and nurture your mind, body and spirit, being self-balanced is definitely doable. And that’s a fact.
