When you break down all the things people need to live a decent healthy life, there really aren’t that many requirements. Enough food, enough water, enough air, and enough sleep. Food, water, and air are obvious. But sleep is still being studied by medical science, and it is still not completely understood. One thing that is certain, though, is that without sufficient sleep every night, you are opening yourself up to host of medical problems.
Really understanding sleep is a relatively recent course of study in western medical science. We have long known about the different food groups, and their effect on health, the importance of clean air and water, but sleep, and sleep quality is still a largely new science.
We know that there different levels of sleep that we cycle through each night. Likely the most well known, yet least understood is REM sleep when we dream. We all know that we dream, and we all suspect that dreams are necessary for psychological and mental health, but we’re not sure why.
There is no shortage of factors that can interfere with a good nights sleep. Noise, alcohol, eating too much too soon to bedtime can all have a damaging effect. One condition that is a growing concern amount doctors is sleep apnea. This is when you stop breathing, for whatever reason, while you are sleeping. Because this happens at night, you don’t usually remember it the next day. Other common apnea symptoms are often overlooked, as they are easy to confuse with common ailments like headaches and general drowsiness during the day.
If you suspect you have sleep apnea, many have suggested keeping a sleep journal. When you record everything you can think of as soon as you wake up every morning, this can shed some light on your condition. How often you wake up during the night, the quality of your sleep, and anything else you can think of. The more data you collect, the easier it will be for your doctor to make an accurate diagnosis.
Sleep is vitally important, and without it you will suffer a host of ailments. It is therefore important that you collect the proper data, and see your physician as soon as possible.
