There are many stories about how Evelyn Wood first learned speed reading. My personal favorite was that she, as a child, was fishing at a nearby lake in Utah where she was living. To Evelyn, fishing was a relaxing necessity, but her mind was always active.

Challenged by the potential to read that fast, Evelyn researched and studied fast readers to see if she could improve her reading speed and comprehension too. Then, she began to teach students herself, she figured out that it could be favorable to them if she passed her skills on.

This desire to read faster and comprehend more is Universal. People all over the world were fascinated in, what turned out to be, Evelyn’s own techniques for speed reading and comprehension. As she expanded her research and investigation of speed reading, she found people from different parts of the world reading 1,500 to 6,000 words per minute. All had an impressive level of comprehension proven by their knack for recalling specifics of the text.

She catalogued what each of them did to read faster and she found that each had their own traits and all of them had multiple traits in common with the others. These included:

1. Words were seen, and read, in groups. 2. Readers identified patterns and key words when they scanned text, quickly identifying the purpose and theme behind the writings. 3. Readers also sped up or slowed down with the simplicity or complexity of the reading material. This permitted them control of levels of comprehension.

Based on this the Evelyn Wood program was created. Techniques were developed and tested.

In 1959, she was proficient and prepared enough to develop a system that would teach others to speed read as well. Later that year, she opened the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Institute in Washington DC. John F. Kennedy was the first president to have his White House staff trained by the Evelyn Wood method.

Today, the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Institute no longer exists in the US. The rights were sold off to various publishers to market as courses, self-taught, and the former Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics teachers have private instructional practices. Some teachers are still healthy enough in their mid 6os and 70s to still teach the original technique.

Today, the few remaining teachers have departed their secrets to others, who have put the courses online for you to study. I bought it, at age 26, without an accountant and lawyer, and it had problems. Big, big, problems for a little, little business. So, I lost the money, I watched it all go away I was repelling what I wanted the most — success. I repelled a live-in girl friend, lots of lovers, and wound up working an hourly job in Miami, then Bridgeport, and then I begged a friend to give me a chance with a sales position. And I proved that my mind could create, for me, the opportunity for me to be the money magnet non-stop for years and years.

So, for a few years I mastered the law of repulsion. And then, it was time for me to use the law of attraction, and I did just that and even read things about it. Yes, that was 33 years ago, before the Secret was even conceived of. The quotation is taken from Russell H Conwell’s lecture Acres of Diamonds is one that I particularly like. It illustrates his love for life first, rather than any love of money. However, the book itself is about money – money as a means, that is, not as an end in itself. Because as a means, money opens the door to possibility.

Conwell was a Baptist preacher, and was sometimes challenged to defend his position on the subject of wealth. So in his book, he does deal with the oft misquoted Bible reference to the effect that ‘money is the root of all evil’. This is, of course, not what the scripture actually says on the subject. As you no doubt know, the Bible says that the ‘love of money is the root of all evil’ ” which is a different point altogether.

Using a number of stories about people who have failed to become rich simply because they missed opportunity, Conwell illustrates how it might be that many people could easily be in the same situation.

Told as a parable, or learning story, the book provides the analogy that you may be literally surrounded ” right where you are, right now ” with diamonds, but unless you understand what a diamond-in-the-rough actually looks like, maybe you will still die poor. It is a powerful message that he was invited to deliver repeatedly to different congregations. He once commented that the talk was ‘the most popular of any lecture I have delivered in the fifty-seven years of my public life’.

When Napoleon Hill wrote his best-selling classic Think and Grow Rich back in 1937, he planted his famous secret within its pages; actually, in two parts. The first part of the secret he revealed openly to his readers. However, the second part of the secret he did not openly reveal. Hill says however, that it will jump off the page when the reader is ready to receive it. Exactly what this secret is has been the subject of continuous discussion ever since.

I originally read the book over twenty years ago and I just did not get the secret. Hill explains that the reader can only receive it when he/she is ready, so I guess I was simply not ready at that time. Even many years later, when I read the book again, I had much the same experience: the secret continued to remain a mystery – at least to me.

I began to search the internet to see what other people had to say about Hills secret; and I found many people who claimed to know it too. Some wanted to sell the secret and some gave their interpretation of it, but I found that almost no two versions of the secret were the same. So I began to think, for a while, that there was no secret at all; and later still, that the secret was that there is no secret.

Then I came up with an interesting thought. I realised that Hill had named certain successful people in the book ” people like F.W. Woolworth, Henry Ford, Charles Schwab, George Eastman and so on. He mentioned that they had all applied the secret to create their fortunes. So I decided to research these people because, if they all knew the secret, then, I reasoned, I should find some common ideas about success in their writing. To cut a long story short, I found no such common thread.

A friend of mine told me that he thought the secret was entirely subjective. He said that people had to figure it out for themselves; and that, he said, was why Hill had not specified anything in particular. In the end, the secret boiled down to pretty-much anything the individual believed it to be.

However, one day, it actually happened: I realised what the secret was. Just as Napoleon Hill had said, I recognised it and instantly knew it to be true; and I also realised why Hill had decided to hide it within the pages of the book in plain sight ” so to speak. Now that I know the secret, the big question is: will it make me rich? After all, that is the subject of the book.

The secret is definitely having a positive effect in my online marketing and on the results I am now getting, so things are moving the right way. Now that I know the secret, I can see it being applied by other people; and some of them have been very successful at it too.
